Single-sided or dual-sided
Single-sided ID card printers print on the front of the card, which is enough for most staff and student cards. Dual-sided printers also print the back in one pass, useful when the back carries terms, a QR code or emergency details.
Ribbon, encoder and volume
Colour ribbons print full-colour photos and logos. If you only need text and a barcode, a monochrome ribbon is cheaper to run. For access control or payment cards, add an encoder for smart cards or magnetic stripes. Small offices that print a few cards a day are fine with a desktop model, while universities and large factories need a faster printer with bigger ribbons.
